Most likely causes
Router or modem restarted or no internet
- Check if other devices in the house still have internet.
- If needed, reboot your router and modem and wait until they are fully back online.
- Signal: other devices work again and the Chromecast returns online in Google Home.
Chromecast has no power
- Check the power cable and adapter and unplug the power for 10 seconds.
- Plug the power back in and wait for the Chromecast to start up.
- Signal: startup screen appears on the TV and Google Home shows the Chromecast as online.
Wifi password or router settings changed
- Check whether the wifi password or network name was recently changed.
- If it changed, open Google Home and enter the new wifi details or put the Chromecast back into setup mode.
- Signal: Chromecast connects again and shows as online.
Temporary software glitch on the Chromecast
- Restart the Chromecast by unplugging and plugging the power cable again.
- If the issue persists, restart the TV and the Google Home app and check for updates.
- Signal: Chromecast comes back online and functions normally.
Factory reset
Warning: a factory reset will erase all settings, linked accounts and wifi info; you must set up the device again in Google Home.
- Make sure the Chromecast is powered and the TV is on.
- Press and hold the small button on the Chromecast for at least 10 seconds until the LED and TV indicate a reset.
- Release the button and wait for the Chromecast to restart and show the welcome screen.
- Open Google Home on your phone and set up the Chromecast again as a new device.
Frequently asked
My phone can't find the Chromecast during setup. What should I do?
Make sure your phone is on the same wifi you plan to use, and that Bluetooth and location services are enabled; restart the Google Home app and try again.
Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz wifi?
If your router uses separate names, try 2.4 GHz first; it can be more reliable during initial setup for some devices.
Will my purchased apps be lost after a reset?
Apps and purchases tied to your Google account remain, but the Chromecast loses all its settings and must be reconfigured.
Chromecast shows offline but TV has picture — why?
Reboot the router and Chromecast, then check in Google Home whether the device still uses the same wifi network.
